The Schooners dropped game one of a doubleheader to North Shore 2-1 on Monday, July 27. The loss brought Mystic to 22-18 on the summer.

Chris Hernandez (Cal State Fullerton) tossed a scoreless first, allowing some traffic due to a fielding error and infield hit.

The Schooners were unable to capitalize on Bryce Detwiler’s (UConn) two-out single through the right side against Bobby Finn (Villanova) in the bottom of the first.

The Navs drew first blood in the second inning, working three walks against Hernandez. Aidan Sengenberger (SHU) came in to score on a wild pitch for the first run of the ballgame.

Mystic was unable to answer in the bottom of the second when Joel Collado (URI) and Gavin O’Brien (Northeastern) each singled.

Anthony Ruggiero (URI) doubled into the left-center field gap in the bottom of the third. Finn was able to strand the baserunner in scoring position, holding Mystic scoreless.

Sengenberger wore a pitch and Joey Bazydlo (Eckard) followed with a single, ending Hernandez’s day. Mystic called on Max Hilsenroth (New Haven), who got out of the jam in the top of the fourth.

Finn’s day ended after 4.2 scoreless innings of work. North Shore’s first call to the bullpen was to Justin Fryer (Northwestern). Fryer walked Ruggiero, but was able to keep the shutout intact.

Mystic answered in the bottom of the sixth, bringing across their first run. Collado worked a walk and Jack Andrews (Merrimack) hit an infield single. On the play, Collado came in to score on an error, tying the ballgame.

Zev Salsberg (Bryant) took the mound in the seventh for the Schooners. Tyler Shulman (Harvard) doubled and Grant Hunter (Binghamton) brought in the go-ahead run on a single.

Ruggiero hit his second double of the contest, but it was not enough, as Fryer closed on the win in the seventh.
