Preview: Schooners back on the road

By: Shannon Bickert

After a rainy storm swooped through New England, the Schooners are back in action on Tuesday, June 23. Mystic travels to Danbury to face off against the 5-9 Westerners.

The rainy day cancelled all NECBL action on Monday evening. The Schooners enter the slate tied with the best win percentage in the NECBL. The Westerners sit last in the NECBL South Division standings.

Danbury won their last game against Vermont courtesy of a three-RBI day from Ronan Donahue (SHU). Noel Rivera (Marist) swiped three of the Westerners' five stolen bases on the game.

Mystic is coming into the matchup with two days off, but most recently defeated Martha’s Vineyard in 10 innings on Saturday. Jack Harley (Stetson) hit the go-ahead RBI single, while MJ Bollinger (UConn) earned the win on the mound in his three innings of relief work.

Donahue is a player to look out for in the matchup, leading the NECBL in RBI with 14 in 13 games played. He is also tied for first in the league in home runs with three.

A key for Mystic will be getting on base and putting pressure on Danbury’s pitching staff. Mystic ranks second in the NECBL in on-base percentage and third in walks drawn. The Schooners have tallied 51 stolen bases on the season and Cam Righi (UConn) is tied for third in the league in stolen bases with nine.

In the last meeting between the squads on Sunday, June 7, Mystic defeated Danbury 6-3. It was a tied ballgame through six at the Shipyard, until the Schooners recorded three unanswered runs in the seventh. The rally started from four walks in the frame, which was the difference-maker in the Schooners victory.

First pitch from Rogers Park Field is set for 6:30 pm. Tune into the live game broadcast on ESPN+.
